Celtic people, who gave the city its name, called it - the Parisii (Celtic Iron Age people who lived on the banks of the river Seine).
The banks of the Seine from the Pont de Sully to the Pont d'IĆ©na have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are located three other UNESCO Heritage sites - the Palace of Versailles in the west, the Palace of Fontainebleau in the south and the medieval fairs site of Provins in the east.
